Get to know La Rumorosa

They say that on moonless nights, you might encounter an old woman hitchhiking in La Rumorosa. However, after picking her up and driving a few kilometers, you'll notice she's no longer in your vehicle. This is just one of the fascinating legends surrounding La Rumorosa, a winding road of dangerous curves that cuts through the Sierra Juarez and is part of Federal Highway 2D connecting Tijuana with Mexicali, passing through Tecate in Baja California.

The name "La Rumorosa" comes from the sound of the wind hitting the rock formations, creating sounds that resemble whispering voices. Driving along this road is a dream for many, especially for the panoramic views of ocher-colored rocky hills, including the famous "mushroom" near the toll booth.

The landscape becomes even more stunning when La Rumorosa is covered in snow, typically between December and February. Along the ravines, you can see the remains of hundreds of overturned vehicles due to the treacherous curves of the road. These remnants form metal scrapyards and tire graveyards that have remained since the 1990s. Back then, drivers referred to it as "the death highway" due to its narrow two lanes.

In addition to the Martian-like scenery, among the rocks of La Rumorosa lies the El Vallecito archaeological site, where the ancient Kumiai people left behind rock paintings. There are also viewpoints where you can spot condors, bighorn sheep, and mountain lions.

On the descent from Tecate to Mexicali, you'll encounter the famous Casa de Piedra. This geopark offers adventure activities like mountain biking, rappelling, and rock climbing on the unique rock formations of La Rumorosa.
