Laguna Salada

Get to know Laguna Salada

Mexicali, Baja California, is a destination full of contrasts that never fails to surprise those who venture to explore it. One of its most fascinating locations is the Laguna Salada. Despite its name, you won't find any water here. The body of water that once filled this area from the Sea of Cortez evaporated in the mid-1980s, revealing a vast expanse of 60 kilometers of sparkling white sand, surrounded by the Centinela, Cucapá, and Juárez mountains.

This place is mesmerizing for extreme sports enthusiasts, who visit for activities such as ultralight flights, mountain biking, off-road excursions, or to participate in challenging races like the "Ultramarathon in the Laguna Salada Desert."

Despite the extreme conditions of being 12 meters below sea level and temperatures reaching 43°C, life persists here with cacti that adorn the landscape and serve as refuge for reptiles, insects, and desert foxes.

The atmosphere of Laguna Salada, almost apocalyptic, has served as a backdrop for scenes in movies like "Resident Evil: Extinction." To keep the adventure alive, follow the path lined with palm trees that will lead you to the nearby Guadalupe Canyon, where you can enjoy rappelling or climbing.
