Get to know Bacalar

Find your favorite destination and explore its charms

Discover this Magical Town in Quintana RooWhen you arrive at the Pueblo Mágico (Magical Town) of Bacalar, you get the sensation that you're seeing an optical illusion created by myriad flashes of blue water, from the deepest shade of blue to turquoise and crystalline. However, it is not a mirage but a reality: it is, in fact, the Laguna de los Siete Colores (Lagoon of Seven Colors), a tourist attraction that invites you to discover Bacalar. Moreover, it is located only 40 minutes away from Chetumal, the capital of the state of Quintana Roo.

We owe this gift of nature to seven cenotes (deep natural wells or sinkholes) distributed along the Bacalar Lagoon's 43 km (26.7 mi) of shoreline. Depending on the time of day, sunlight illuminates the entrances to the underground caves, allowing travelers to appreciate the range of colors, as well as their varied depths. The cenotes feature several activities, such as kayaking, snorkeling, and scuba diving, that allow you to explore these aquatic labyrinths.

Unmissable experiences in BacalarAnother way to enjoy the nature that surrounds this Caribbean Magical Town is by staying in one of the lagoonside hotels in Bacalar. Most of them are ideal for a romantic weekend getaway or to forget about the hustle and bustle of the city. Its main features are the hammocks and swings suspended over the lagoon.

You can't say you've visited Bacalar until you've walked through its downtown area. Here, you will find the San Felipe Fort, which protected the Mayan community from pirate invasions in ancient times. Visit its museum and walk along with the vestiges of 11 cannons. Here, you will have access to unique views of the Pueblo Mágico of Bacalar to immortalize in pictures. Take advantage of your time here by riding bicycles around the streets and sitting down for a cold beer accompanied by fresh seafood tacos.

The Pueblo Mágico of Bacalar is located very close to the Riviera Maya and approximately a four-hour drive from Cancún.
